Hey y’all. We’re just under three weeks from game start and that means it’s time to get rolling on memes. We’re starting out pretty simple with an OOC icebreaker. Whether you’re totally new to journal RP or have been playing with the same people for years, it’s never a bad idea to pause for a chat about this hobby of ours!

With this meme, we want to hear about you: what your RP style is, what sort of plots you enjoy and what tropes you love to see in play. For now, please hold off on seeking specific lines. We’ll be doing a game-wide intro post/wanted lines meme next week! This one is all about the (wo)man behind the curtain.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: I guess I did like... the usual childhood LARPing (Animals (all of them) and Animorphs), but text-based for...almost... 18 years.... Katie's actually the one who introduced me to text RPing, and I started out on a MUCK and graduated to just generally one-on-one RPs over IM, e-mail, in Word docs when we were sitting in Katie's game room, or in notebooks that I still definitely have when we were on car trips 😬I did a TINY bit of RP on Gaia back in the day, but generally have avoided group games because I'm more shy on the internet than I am in person for some reason. Other genres include: X-men, various Marvel, various DC, Vampire the Masquerade, Shadowhunters, Persona, generic supernatural, generic superhero, SaGa Frontier, Kingdom Hearts, Cats (yes, the musical), I was Solid Snake for like 5 minutes in a multifandom game.... the list goes on, I'm pretty sure. It's been wild.

RP Style: Depends on the character?? I typically have at least one friendly/goofy person and they're easier on journals. I often get tripped up at the speed of replies on journal entries, but like the ease that comes with not having to think about prose. I like IC/OOC threads a lot too though, and tend to write middle-length tags I think??? Every once in a while I can convince myself to do a short one but it's hard. I will backtag forever if someone else wants to but I think a week is where shame starts to hit if no one is asking me to tag. I'm happy to do logs but I only seek them out when there's a clear reason for one, like something that needs discussing or resolving.

Favorite Tropes/Lines: I liek friends???

Favorite Faces: Dove Cameron, who I'm TRYING not to use this game.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I mostly just make sure I have at least one nice friendly person so I have a blanket excuse to potentially bother everyone in the game, but otherwise I'm pretty open I think?? I like to start with one boy and one girl, annnd I normally end up with at least one soft boy.

Inspirations: Depends on the character! I don't have a standard for developing a kiddo at all. Current characters are just like... 1) Pax is my friendly person, and 2) in the last game I felt like I didn't have anyone who was annoyed or salty in any meaningful way so I wanted one again?? It was a pretty basic start for both these losers.

Anything Else?: The first few months I'll probably oscillate between VERY AVAILABLE and slightly absent because of the whole no job + traveling a bunch thing, but you guys can't escape me and I won't drop off the face of the planet at any point for more than a few days, I imagine.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: It’s been about 15 years now?? I remember very clearly apping my first character five days before my sixteenth birthday, because it was 4th of July and that’s what I chose to do with my night. I played Eloise Midgen and Zacharias Smith, starting a long legacy of me hoarding Hufflepuffs. There’s about three or four years there where I kind of got away from this blasted hobby and tried to live in the real world, but I was definitely always waiting for a chance to come back and make everyone’s lives hell again.

Other Genres and Settings: I’ve almost always stayed kind of Harry Potter-adjacent, because it was safe. For a brief span of time I tried slice-of-life no-powers, no-metaplot RP, like where kids just go to college or get regular jobs. It was such a different world, though, I was almost immediately like “this is not my beautiful house” and skedaddled. Cheryl and I also very very briefly did a Hunger Games PSL, which was probably the closest I got to straying outside my comfort zone pre-semi-retirement.

RP Style: I’m a master shitposter. I love long, dumb conversations via journal comments that go so incredibly off-the-rails, especially when two characters have really good chemistry and it’s just dumb/witty banter. Then I’ll be the asshole not paying attention in line at Starbucks or walking down the street because I’m glued to my phone and I need to fire off this quick comment before someone else comes along and makes that same comment!!!!
I do love a good, short scene, either in a log or an IC/OOC. I’m a big fan of scenes that feel more like an excerpt from the day or an event, instead of feeling like they have to encompass a full scene. So maybe it’s the aftermath of a disastrous dinner, or two people sitting on a roof and drinking and the scene starts in the middle of an incredibly stupid argument. If you do a scene with me, I’ll usually propose we wrap it up at about the 3 or 4 page mark because it’ll usually feel like we can just imply that the rest of the night went about as well as the last 3-4 pages went. Also because sometimes it took us a month to get to that point and I can’t let you let me drag it out any longer.

Favorite Tropes/Lines:

Siblings who squabble constantly but will absolutely kill for each other in the moment. I have a codependent sibling problem.

Extremely platonic, male/female best friends. I’m into any extremely platonic best friendship, but because books and movies and TV have trained me to expect any boy and girl with some level of chemistry or understanding of each other will want to smooch at some point, I fuckin’ love tossing that trope by the wayside for the sake of some super close friends.

Squabble squabble squabble smooch. Even better if the smooch doesn’t solve anything.

Nontraditional families. Fuck me up fam.

Favorite Faces: I do have some PBs that I’m attached to from my recent history (Amanda Arcuri, Nicole Muñoz, Tyler Alvarez, Ysa Penarejo), but I think the PB I’m most stuck with, for better or worse, is Norman Reedus. I PBed the greasiest man on earth too many times. I tried many times to find an alternate PB that occasionally showered, but he was the only person who fit that character, who I’ve now gone and made a teacher.

Favorite Character Archetypes:

SENSITIVE BOYS. Especially sensitive privileged boys. This started way back when with my Zacharias Smith and I will never stop creating my emotionally maladjusted sons of wealth.

OVERACHIEVERS ON THE VERGE OF A MELTDOWN. I’m going to push them over that edge.

LOOK AT THIS PRETTY GIRL THAT’S GONNA PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE. Sometimes combined with the above.

R/IAMVERYSMART. Have you met my favorite son, Percy Weasley?

Inspirations: Usually it’s the face, and usually I have to make the icons myself. Or at least some of the icons. I bond with a character over making hundreds of tiny faces of them, because then I can imagine how I would use each and every one of these godforsaken icons.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: Jiminy Fuckmas. I started when I was twelvish, which is now more than twenty years ago 😬 and I've been running games of some sort for about that long. I took a break from online RP in 2009ish but was still doing tabletop, then came back in 2016/17 for gooseberryhigh. My journal usernames have always been bad. Back on greatestjournal I played a werewolf head boy whose username was chewsonchairs.

Other Genres and Settings: I. Love. Tabletop. I will always have a soft spot for the mega-broken D&D 3.5e and the absurd characters you can build in it, but I enjoy 5e and Pathfinder as well. I love number crunchy systems, but have also enjoyed various one pager rules lite games from the internet, Monster Hearts and the Dragon Age setting.

Aside from that, I got my start with AOL chatroom RP and Sailor Moon roleplaying in the late nineties via email and message board, which was... just...an absurd community. MUCK and MUSH RP, usually set in X-Men. Dabbled in Digimon, did my own "pan-fandom" Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy High School dafjkhgadlkjf) and eventually made the jump to Harry Potter journal games. I'd say Sailor Moon and Harry Potter have always been my big two. The only true canon characters I can play are Ron Weasley, Ramza Beoulve from Final Fantasy Tactics and Sailor Venus and honestly knowing that probably explains a lot about all of my characters.

RP Style: Logs and threading are my bread and butter! I love being able to edit in logs, and like that you can weave tags between two or more people together when you're writing things in gdocs. That said, I know that drive some people crazy lol so I only do it if my writing partner is comfortable with it. I am quite bad at comment RP and get overwhelmed very quickly in shitposts afdjhdfl, but I still enjoy the flow of it! It takes me a while, but I always try to reply everyone.

My narrative tags tend to be uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh very long and I feel super bad about that always and know I need an editor. I 100% LOVE ALL TAGS and don't care if the person tagging me back responds to my 2 paragraphs with a sentence and a half. When I'm threading, I like when scenes have a clear flow with a beginning and end. If a thread feels like it's really going somewhere, I will tag it for as long as it takes to reach its natural conclusion, even if that's multiple weeks. I also don't mind if a thread is only 6 posts total or 40, as long as we're all having fun. (Also I guess I should mention that I can and have literally back tag comment threads for an entire game.)

Favorite Tropes/Lines: FOUND FAMILY. FOUND FAMILY. FOUND FAMILY. FOUND FAMILY. I love playing big brothers, either Actual Older Brothers or Big Brother Types. Friendships are my faves, especially inseparable best friends. My characters tend to Go Hard, whatever they're doing. I like happy endings!! Romance line-wise, I ADORE friends-to-lovers, rivals-to-lovers and idiots-to-lovers. Gimme dat strong basis of mutual affection and respect blossoming into something more hell yeah.

Favorite Faces: Matt Bennett and Alia Bhatt are very, very, veryvery dear to me and are sort of inseparable from the characters I put them to. :'( I would love to use Avan Jogia and Darren Criss again. Benjamin Wadsworth, Letitia Wright, Louis Garrel and Go Ah-Sung are faces I'd like to use, although IDK if I have the capacity to play the smarm Benjamin Wadsworth projects. I swear to fuckin' god I'm gonna use Aneurin Barnard some day, but IDK if it'll be this game.

Favorite Character Archetypes: S A D. P A L A D I N S. I am weak for a lawful good character with a soft heart. I personally enjoy playing, as I mentioned, big brother types. I like playing shitheads and space aliens and I often explore loneliness and isolation as character beats. Gruff and grumpy old professor is a character type I don't get to play much in high school games but hey now Alex and I can torment players with an entire staff of old professors.

Inspirations: Most of my characters come about because I see a meme or a youtube video and I'm like "How can I ...make this into a terrible character?" Generally I start with a vague idea of how I want the character to be, and whatever major events happened to them to make them that way. I tend to have a good idea of the character's personality and life before I decide on a PB, which makes PB hunting a horribly painful process for me because I get really picky sigh.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: My first online RP experience was like . . . . . . twenty(one) years ago. I did a long retirement though and this is my fourth year back!!!

Other Genres and Settings: Harry Potter is definitely my major one even before retirement, but I've done some X-Men/Mutants/Comics, Sailormoon/Magical Girls, Final Fantasy, General Swords & Sorcerors Fantasy. I clearly very enjoy stuff where I get to play with magic powers. My first RP was a mailing list of some sort, and I've tried general message board and email, but I enjoy journal the most. (Oh, I've done tabletop too whoops!!!! Basically just 3.5, but I love reading Pathfinder books and think 5e was fun the one time I did it.)

RP Style: My favorites are comment RP and IC/OOC threads, though preference usually depends on the character I'm playing and generally flip flops over the months. I'm going to TRY to write shorter tags this year, or at least not fuss so much over Everything Sounding Perfect so I can juggle more scenes. Being compleeeetely honest, I tend to put weird extra pressure on myself with logs and flake out on them. I'm very open to backtagging, but get hit-or-miss after a few days.

Favorite Tropes/Lines: Any sort of general H I J I N K S. Partners in Crime. Platonic Female Friendships. (Pipsie! Rosy/Ursula!) Pigtails Lovingly Being Pulled. I do very enjoy shipping and am down for any combinations as long as the characters spark. I don't really have any specific ship tropes that I'm into, but I like balanced supportive relationships a lot.

Favorite Faces: None that I'm possessive of, but my want list is LONG. [abridged] Erika Tham, Anna Akana, Piper Curda, Jenny Boyd's Eye Brows, Aimee Lou Wood, Medalion Rahimi, Lyrica Okano, Jessika Van, Carmela Barsamian. [forces self to stop] Parham Rownaghi, John-Alan Slactha, Tom Maden, Caleb Ruminer, Emery Kelly, Will Paccaro for some boys off the top of my head. For older faces, Jameela Jamil and Elodie Yung are high on my list.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I enjoy the iconic Blair Waldorf richierich/alphagirl/meangirl-type and finding ways to deconstruct it. (Ursula's 2 year arc in Gooseberry was my fave to play.) Also super into playing joyful adventure kids. I like REALLY love seeing tropey highschool tv show archetypes, but infused with extra layers.

Inspirations: Definitely inspired a lot by faces. Fred came from wanting to do something like the Cowboy LARPers in Gooseberry again and then stumbling on this Madelaine Petsch look. Eddy came from ??? artificing + astronomy + arithmancy = magirocketscience ??? along with the face and some general plotting with Cheryl to do Thelma & Louise Moms together.

Anything Else?: VERY!! EXCITED!! LIKE!! YOU HAVE!!! NO IDEA!!!!!!!!! I wanna plot so bad already guys.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: This is year three for me.
RP Style: I love to scene. Gimme that IC/OOC. Happy to backtag forever. Love getting to go deeper with the characters, love getting to read your writing. Just find it very rewarding and I learn a lot about my characters doing it. My favorite journal stuff is getting to play out group dynamics. Roommates, teams, etc. Really like getting to see all these voices interacting at once. Oh, and I fucking love a reaction face.
Favorite Tropes/Lines: I've played too few to state any trends, but I really loved Pansy-Monet and Gregory-[All of his prisoners]. I would say that a commonality between the two is that I like writing characters who challenge others. This might be stepping on the next question's toes, but what I like about RP'ing is how much we affect each other. I want to write characters that make you have to think and react. And I love being shocked by your choices and tags and having to think about what my characters will do next. Happy to ship when it seems like there's unique energy between characters. Thus far I've only written kind of mature, emotional relationships. Felicity probably won't be that.
Favorite Character Archetypes: Since I'm so new, I'm trying to make a point not to repeat anything. I want all my characters to be quite different. [....] That being said. I'd say all the characters I've written so far are essentially Good, and I'm usually good to them. And, they have to be funny (or, at least make me laugh -- can't guarantee universality of their humor). Relationship with family informs a lot of my characters. Hmm what else? I'm tempted to say my characters in this game will be more Bad (y'all are having a negative influence on me), but I think they're just more "complex."
Inspirations: It's usually a few details that I find funny or interesting. And then there's A LOT of discovery as I write the app. I'll write something without much thought and then decide if I agree with it or not. Then it stays or gets cut. There's also a lot of "If this thing is true, what else is true?"
Anything Else?: I love to write with everyone. You are all so talented and kind.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: I officially started when I was about 14, soooo... 19 years ago (grimace emoji). The first game I applied to was a message board Ranma 1/2 game of all things. They rejected me for my bad spelling.

Other Genres and Settings: IN THE EARLY DAYS I was mostly in Digimon and Sailor Moon games, with a small foray into Sonic the Hedgehog. Eventually I went panfandom, where I played Kaworu from NGE, Balthier from FFXII, Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, etc. etc. etc. AND OF COURSE, Harry Potter games. I never played any canon characters of note and instead just made a bunch of OCs. I also got into tabletop RP in college, and played mostly D&D 3.5 and GURPS.

RP Style: I really like IC/OOC scenes, because for some reason they're easier for me to keep on top of??? I like logs but I KNOW I'm a big flake sometimes. Still, I'm hoping to do more of them in PP than I did in FW. :c I don't have the energy for massive shitposting but when do get pulled into it, it can be fun. I love some journal comment back and forth, and intimate warded convos about FEELINGS that branch out from a good shitpost. I'm admittedly not great about backtagging because I'm forgetful, but will happily do it if reminded!!! My tags tend to be long-medium-length but I'm working on embracing shorter tags!!!!

Favorite Tropes/Lines:

Partners in crime. I love a scheming ship!

Scheming in general. When a group of friends comes together to execute a "clever" plan, like saving Cole from Coralee, illegal seances, saving Todd from Molly, etc.

Mean Girl clique

Pining. slow burn.

Little siblings annoying older siblings who love them anyway.

Rivalries, both affectionate and not-so-much.

Friends who are always yelling at one another or bickering.

Excessive protective friends.

Favorite Faces: I'm VERY attached to Rami Malek, Chris Colfer, Laura Berlin, Alberto Rosende and Diego Luna, and would love to use some of them again buuuut I think I'd just end up playing the exact same characters lol. It's impossible for me to not look at them and be like that's Calvin, that's Rafael, etc. I have a lot of PBs on my waiting list and I'm not even going to bother listing them.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I like........ messes. I really enjoy making my characters make bad decisions and look really unfavorable. Inspirations: Usually I'll get an idea first of like... something I want to do. A moment that sounds really fun to me. Like Val, I wanted to play a really sore loser captain who thought she was sweet, based on imagining her saying "All that matters is that we have fun!" while not meaning any of it. Laszlo is a port from Gooseberry, and was initially a big of a necessity based on past pcal plots. BUT this time I just remember how much FUN it was to fuck with people via potions, and to have a character who was very amoral about it without being totally sympathetic. So I guess I get my initial ideas based on what I want to be able to do in the game, and build a person who would allow me to do it.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: I've been roleplaying since late elementary/early middle school with breaks here and there along the way. I started on MUCKs and transitioned to one-on-ones (hi Rin!) and small group stuff via email/IM/YahooGroups/boards after that, but later got into group games on LJ/IJ/DW. I think the short answer is that I've been doing this for way too long??

Other Genres and Settings: The majority of games I've played in were some sort of X-Men/Marvel/OC Mutant thing, but I've also dabbled in Persona, Sailor Moon, SaGa Frontier, World of Darkness (especially Vampire the Masquerade), Shadowhunters, original supernatural stuff, and panfandom stuff. Gooseberry was my first Harry Potter game, so...this is only my second Harry Potter game.

RP Style: I prefer a blend of scenes (threads > logs but open to both) and journal comments; they're both better for different things and add to each other IMO. Alsoooo, I like being able to touch base with other players via email for clarification, to confirm that we're on the same page about things, and for some light plotting at times, depending on the situation. So don't be surprised if I'm hitting up your inbox and always feel free to hit mine. I'm generally open to backtags as long as it makes sense with other things going on in the game.

Favorite Tropes/Lines: I'm not trope savvy enough to answer this question, honestly. But I do like found families, complicated/inexplicable friendships and relationships, rivals-turned-something-else, responsibility partners, overprotective dads with hopeless kids (from either side), bff trios (especially when one ends up the third wheel -- hi Cecil/Levi/Diego and Rupert/Iggy/Balthazar~), and a billion other things. I'm really just interested in finding interesting dynamics and having some fun, so I'll try anything.

Favorite Faces: I like lots of faces! Based on icon count, Jordan Rodrigues and Hong Jong-hyun are my Big Two and I'll be missing them both this game (sigh). I'm apparently just going to work through all the members of my favorite kpop band (whoops) and there are some past PBs I'm considering giving another run (Lee Hyun-jae, Jeremy Kapone, etc.), but that's about it. I don't have plans for a long-haired boy this game and I feel empty inside.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I try not to stick too closely to types, but broadly speaking...angry characters with bad social skills but good hearts, responsible caretakers with varying levels of softness, upbeat good-time boys that are shallow or dumb or both, and overachieving academics with frayed nerves are among my repeat patterns.

Inspirations: This varies drastically for me and I can't always even pinpoint the origin of a character concept. Often, I just have a 'what if this?' moment and then build on that until I have a general concept. The characters don't fully solidify until I've picked out a PB and found them in the process of writing them, though. Later on in the game, they're more likely to be impacted by 'what am I not playing yet?' or 'wouldn't it be interesting to throw x at y character or z situation?' considerations and the like, though.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: I started when I was like..... eleven and I have technically not retired in the 20 years since, although I did move into PSLs-only for a couple of years. I got my start in Sailor Moon email/forum games, then jumped into Harry Potter journal games, then did multifandom journal games for awhile before coming back to HP four years ago and the rest is history.

Other Genres and Settings: My multifandoms were Metal Gear Solid, Star Trek, The Hunger Games and The Vampire Diaries. Yeeep. I like games that balance light-hearted slice-of-life stuff with metaplotty mystery stuff, but if I have to pick one or the other, I'd lean towards the latter. I'd love to play a game with adult characters sometime, but I do love high school settings because you can't help but force lighthearted stuff to happen even when shit is hitting the fan.

RP Style: I LOVE PROSE. In IC/OOCs, gdocs, whatever. But I can be very inconsistent about it, like ideally I want to backtag things forever but I always feel ashamed about how long it takes me to write a single prose tag and I drop out of guilt. Gotta stop doing that! I've been suffering from burnout on and off for the past two years, which has taken a toll on how much RP I've been able to do, but I'd like to try turning things around this game by keeping my character load low. I enjoy commentspam but I don't have the attention span for it most days. :( Presley should be a pretty easy voice to play though!! I hope!!

Favorite Tropes/Lines: FOUND FAMILY, ofc. Messy siblings relationships where they simultaneously love and hate each other. I love when two people are just awful and obnoxious, and they're ?platonic best friends who enable each other in every way. I'm open to anything that brings out a different side of my character? I love to be surprised.

Favorite Faces: The only PBs I've reused are Luke Pasqualino and Bex Taylor-Klaus, and I already used them last game so we're STARTING FRESH, babey. Well, I may or may not reuse Paulina Singer? And I've always wanted to PB Robert Pattinson from that movie where he has very bad hair and glasses, but I can never come up with a good concept.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I have only four characters types and I'm running out of ways to remix them.

• Privileged rich boy with daddy issues and bad coping mechanisms.
• Antisocial grump who goes to parties because they hate being alone with their thoughts.
• Melodramatic flirt who's all charm and no substance.
• Highly repressed, misguided paladin wannabe.

I generally like to play characters who try hard to project a certain image, and feel like they're falling short? Some of my characters are very sincere and have noble ideals, and some of them are pathologic liars who only care about themselves, but they're all fakers in their own way.

Inspirations: UH, good question. The character idea usually comes before I have a face for it, and I adjust to match the face better. For teen games, I do usually start with a High School Stock Character, then I decide what I want their voice to sound like, then I build the rest of the character from there.. My inspiration for Presley was a little unusual, in that I had a username already and I built a concept around being able to use it.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: I'M A GRANDMOTHER.  UM.  I first started as a wee bairn on blogger blogs and aol chat rooms with friends at the age of..13?  HOLY CRAP HOW IS IT ALMOST TWENTY YEARS NOW.  Moved to LJ/DJ games, then GJ (Kas was in my first ever gj game way back in the day, and she introduced me to alex and churl hai guysssss!) and IJ.  Slowed with games around 2013ish and stuck mostly to PSLs, then I was ON A BREAK for the last two years and CHURL and ALEX called me back with the siren song of Peckenpaugh.

Other Genres and Settings: I've just started DnD?  But no, most of my RP has been journal/writing based.  I've done a ton of fandoms, though- comics and myths and MUSICALS and other random books and movies but I always come back to HP stuff!

RP Style: I like all of it.  I love finishing scenes when possible, but I know life happens and I think I've gotten a lot more lax as I've gotten older.  Most of my scene tags are a few paragraphs, usually a little longer if I'm starting or for my first tag just to establish where the character's at.  I'll keep tagging until one/both of us lose interest or if the game moves to a point

How Long Have You Been RPing?: My VERY FIRST RP was in a Lord of the Rings forum when I was in like eighth grade and I was an elf. And then I went to those god-awful Harry Potter discussion boards in high school and also AIM RP'ed and then I took pretty much a break except for one on one RPing with friends and on some private forum boards but then in like ??08/09?? I discovered lj/ij and it's been on/off since then depending on how much time I have!

Other Genres and Settings: I have mostly done Harry Potter RP, preferably MWPP or Future Kids, I've really never liked The Canon Era much. I did a lot of Hunger Games RP when that was In Vogue and I really have always loved like superpower OC games.
Then this one time I was in a panfandom game as Batman that I def only apped so I could reply like "I AM THE NIGHT" at people and it was deeply worth it.

RP Style: I deeeeply adore prose and IC/OOC tagging. UNfortunately sometimes my brain can't make the pretty sentences after I've been at work writing all day. BUT that has actually helped me become a lil better at shorter tags. And shitposting has become Key and I do adore that. Usually I have at least ten one-line replies in my in any given hour.

My Big Problem is as soon as I deem a prose thread Serious And I Love It, I feel like I have to write really long flowery tags that tell you all my kids' feelings, and I'm sorry if I subject you to all that writing. I can backtag uuussuuuallly up to a week without feeling too bashful, but if you give me permission I will backtag ad infinitum, especially when I'm pretty sure no one else is watching. How Long Have You Been RPing?: UH depends on how you define it?? I stumbled into forum rp when I was like 12, but it was very loosey goosey. Someone held my hand and walked me over to journal rp (on DEADJOURNAL of all things) from there. I started off in X-Men, and I think my very first ever journal still exists somewhere, and I would rather die than let it be seen. :) I eventually found Harry Potter journal games, and more or less stuck there. I think I was briefly out of the RP world, for a year or less, but I don't remember anything unless Alex helps me.
Other Genres and Settings: Online, I've only ever really done journal RP. I've dabbled outside of Harry Potter. I've done panfandom, Final Fantasy, Hunger Games, Dragon Age, and original setting games. I like fantasy elements. Gimme magic, super powers, crazy shit! I don't care as much for real world stuff. I also did Pathfinder once and wasn't super enthused about it, but it also may have been the min maxing group I was in? Plus, I don't like to do a lot of math in my pretendy fun times.
RP Style: I think all these things have their place and time? I like how quick and casual journal commenting is, and it's a great way to be silly and throw characters together that don't usually interact. Plus, one minute, you're talking about your favorite ice cream, then ten comments later you're having an emotional heart to heart. I REALLY like doing logs in gdocs because you can edit them and splice stuff together and you end up with something that sounds so much more natural than the a/b/a/b journal scenes. But I also think IC/OOCs are much easier and chill to jump into when you don't have a plan and you just want to see where things go.

I try to keep my tags shorter, because otherwise I'll waffle forever on how to say this or that, and then it'll be so late I won't submit the comment?? I'm willing to backtag forever, but a week late is where I slink off in shame. If you want to keep going after that, I'm happy to, you just have to poke me and tell me you're not judging me for my tardiness. I will say, though, that I always love getting back tags? BACK TAG ME FOREVER? Tag me from two games ago, idgaf. Literally go tag me in that thing from three years ago right now.
Favorite Tropes/Lines: I guess we all just love Found Family because I REALLY LOVE THAT. I love assholes begrudgingly finding friendship. I like Ride Or Die friendships. I also like characters forming unexpected relationships.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: 15+ years!!! My first HP RPG was in 2004 and I've been fairly consistently in games since then on LJ/GJ/IJ/DW, although I sometimes take a break between games to recharge. I'm just coming back from a 2-year break ahhhh what are words help. (P.S. FUN STORY I even kept up roleplaying when I was backpacking with my sister around Australia and I have fond memories of us squidged up together on a narrow hostel bed passing my laptop back and forth while we logged.)

Other Genres and Settings: I'm a one-fandom woman!!

RP Style: I like the spontaneity of comment threads but I get a bit overwhelmed when they turn into shitposts because I can't keep up. (I try!! But by the time I've read a comment and thought of a perfect response there are like 2348 more replies asdfjs;ld.) IC/OOC threads are nice because they feel more lowkey but you can still craft a fun little mini scene. Logs are probably my least favourite because I'm a short tagger but I always feel compelled to try and write longer tags in logs?? Idk, I'm a fan of keeping things short and sweet I guess. I'm willing to backtag but after about a week I feel embarrassed. Favorite Character Archetypes: I try and mix up characteristics into ~new blends~ so I don't feel like I'm replaying a character, but I'm fond of feisty girls (loudmouths are easier to play!!), laidback sporty girls, and sweet cinnamon rolls who you can't help feeling protective of. I used to love playing a high-maintenance ~mean girl~ who loves stirring shit up for the lulz, but not so much any more.

Inspirations: To paraphrase Neil Gaiman, I make them up out of my head? Idk I'm probably subconsciously inspired by lots of things. I have been known to steal ideas from books I've recently read. As for Freya, I've wanted to play an Intrepid Girl Detective for the loooongest time and I've finally got my chance!!

How Long Have You Been RPing?: Almost 17 years now??? Jesus Christ. I started on Neopets, then Invisionfree, then GJ, then IJ, now DW and RPed in WoW, GW2, and FFXIV between then.
Other Genres and Settings: I did a lot of MMO rp in high school and college because I liked the social aspect and also the quick on-the-go RP style that made it perfect for RPing scenes for as short or long as I wanted. Buuuut despite that, it was also very time consuming and at some point it became tedious to log in and sit at my computer for hours with only the game to entertain me so I retired from that a few years ago. 😬

I'm usually drawn to OC PB games on IJ with some sort of magical/fantasy/supernatural setting, like werewolves vs vampires or mythical reincarnates or superheroes or WIZARDS. If I RP Harry Potter, it's usually post-grad Marauder's Era. I'm not really used to playing teenagers but I'm TRYING :(

Uhhh for fandoms, I usually wind up in a panfandom game once every few years and play Aerith from FFVII but inevitably flake because I don't know who 80% of the characters are.

RP Style:
I love comment banter on journals and I like threading in IC/OOCs or even just in an old school thread post. And if it doesn't get finished to a neat conclusion then it's whatever, at least we have something to show for it. My reply lengths and the formality of my writing varies in IC/OOC threads but I also like how casual it feels so I tend to get them written faster because I'm not sitting there and overthinking it.

For logs in gdocs, I do best with rapidfire logging and seamless threading. Short replies that flow together neatly and intertwine with my writing partner's so it's easier to read and react to each action. If the replies are longer, I'll add any edits to a writing partner's replies in a different font color so it's easy to see. I don't really like traditional blocky A/B/A/B style replies because I don't think they read well as a completed narrative.

I'll try to be upfront if I'm busy and I can't log! I prefer handwaving most things and discussing them behind the scenes instead of writing them out because IIIII don't have the time or energy to write a bunch of logs T B H. In the past, I've had a tendency to get excited and take on more than I can handle and then getting overwhelmed and flaking out so I've been trying to be better about realizing my limits.

Favorite Tropes/Lines:

FOUND FAMILY. I love playing caretaker types that just accumulate children (sometimes their own age or older) over the course of a game.

Unrequited feelings (Bonus for morons mutually pining and never acting on it, either from being clueless or from feelings of unworthiness. BONUS BONUS if it never comes to fruition and they only talk about it years later after they've both moved on 👀👀👀)

Angel/Demon-type pairings 👀 LOVE SOME OPPOSITES ATTRACT WITH THE ADDED SPICE OF CONFLICTING MORALS. Crowley and Aziraphale are extremely *chef kiss* Cecil/Levi ALSO COUNTS because the Headboy and the rule breaking shithead fell in love.

Favorite Character Archetypes: uhhhhhhh see above re: tropes/lines. i have patterns when it comes to character creation but it's :C tough. uh. i love academic darlings with secret wounds. loners with secret wounds. seekers of perfection with secret wounds. secret wounds!!! self-afflicted afflictions! sufferers for the cause, holding banners so heavy (with secret wounds). i love a good mean girl but have never pulled one off exactly. soft dreamy types or oddball creatives. most of the characters i write tend to take on their own colors as we go.
Inspirations: lakdhglkahg lmao. i......... don't know cries. i often have very specific imagery revolving in my head as i write, but it's hard to say how it gets there. i'm highly inspired by music and tend to have extensive playlists for characters, moods, settings, etc. soooo almost every childe i've played has like a set of Visuals and a song or two that belongs to them forever (ex. monet: Roses + Dark Horse + Still Water, etc). xenia is very Tweed + Book + Golden Ring.

How Long Have You Been RPing?: Man, who even knows. Time is a flat circle. Pretty new in the grand scheme of things. Started off in the Tumblr sphere a few years ago, went over to tabletop, got into the Twitch space, went back to tabletop and then wound up here…. This is my first time on Dreamwidth so I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Other Genres and Settings: First time doing the whole “Harry Potter journal RP” thing and I am rather excited. THAT SAID this not my first time in a Harry Potter setting - I usually dabble in the Marauder’s Era and once ran a Riddle era one-shot. Other than HP, I tend to lean sci-fi or even crime/mystery settings. Though I have to say, Harry Potter is my one true love.
RP Style: At the moment, I lean prose heavy just cause that’s what I’m used to. Other than that - dunno! ask me again a month into the game. Right now, I'm just ready to get my hands dirty.

There’s probably more here, but off the top of my head I think my big two are: 1) I love stories where characters come to learn their destiny and then decide to fight those forces of destiny and 2) I love stories where the protagonist becomes disillusioned with an establishment and then proceeds to burn down that establishment and create something new.

Favorite Character Archetypes: Y’all, I have a long, dark history of playing Death Eaters. In the last two tabletop games I was in, the GM invited me in to play the Big Bad. So for a very long time I made a living off playing Certified Trashfires. In non HP settings, I’m big on investigative journalists, lawyers, private investigators and U.S, Marshals. I love weary leaders or leaders who have responsibility thrust upon them and then gradually develop an unwavering commitment to it (In fact!!! I would say this is my All Time Fave Character Archetype.) It’s hard for me to stay away from fighty people and from creative minds. While I think you can see bits of all of this in Hypatia, I’m trying to go more Elsa than Darth Vader with her... which is a serious departure from my usual. SO YEAH! I’M EXCITED TO BREAK THE MOLD! That said, I’m also taking bets on how long it takes her to stray. Haha.

I also like playing:

- Irredeemable trashboy that eventually goes up in flames
- Foul-mouthed, whiskey drinking, mess of a woman
- The rookie on a team

And while I love Weary Leaders Who Have Responsibility Thrust Upon them and Then Gradually Develop an Unwavering Commitment To It, I love it EVEN MORE when that character is teamed up with a person of a similar disposition and it’s just these two weary souls marching onwards and leaning on each other.

Finally, I’m a big fan of people who used to be childhood friends but then strayed apart because life led them down different paths. “Exes” is probably the correct label for this - but let’s be clear: I’m a sucker for friendship exes, romantic exes, literally the whole spectrum of ‘We Used To Have This Relationship But Look How We Have Changed!’ (I’m also a messy bitch that lives for drama, okay.)
Inspirations: Oooo great question! I usually need a strong backstory hook to draw me in. Sometimes it's just one random piece of info that makes me go!! Oh!!! I’d love to build a character backstory around that!!! And we go from there. For Hypatia, it was her name. Hypatia was an Egyptian philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician and that’s how I wound up with my Overachieving Pureblood Space Witch.

RP Style: I like the quick nature of journal RP. I can also do posts of a couple hundred words sometimes, though I don't do that as much on this RP.
Favorite Tropes/Lines: I like families, especially big families. And sibling relationships, like where they tease each other a lot but are also loyal and protective toward each other. I also like close friend groups. And I like complex character conflicts where neither character is entirely in the right or wrong.

Favorite Character Archetypes: I'm a sucker for a sweetheart cinnamon roll type. I also like shy bookish/artistic girls; anxious, perfectionist overachievers; the longsuffering responsible ones in the friend group; spunky, hot-headed tomboys; and more.
Inspirations: For my PP characters, I generally chose names I liked and thought about what kind of character they would be, then found a suitable PB and used their icons for further inspiration. In general, I like browsing stock images of people and RP sites (especially applications) to find character inspiration. Books, movies, etc. can also provide ideas. My dreams do inspire me, but more for settings and vague ideas than for characters.
